Why Pulo®?

1. Why should I choose your Pulo® pillow instead of other orthopaedic pillows?
The Pulo® pillow is the most versatile pillow in the market place with so many variable sleeping positions that it is bound to give you a relaxing and comfortable night's sleep.
Whatever your discomfort, sleeping disorder, or physical pain problems, the Pulo® pillow can help.
The Pulo® pillow takes into account that everybody's sleeping profile is different and because it contains inserts that can be interchanged to vary its strength of support or degrees of softness, it is really is the answer to most sleeping problems.
Its versatility means that you, the user, can decide exactly how you want to sleep and not how some hard uselessly shaped pillow wants you to. In fact many so called medical pillows can actually cause the user more harm than good. Osteopaths, chiropractors, doctors, physiotherapists and all other therapists and practitioners think the Pulo® pillow is amazing and a terrific way to assist therapy at home as well as playing an important role in post operational care. Please view our page of testimonials to understand the full impact the Pulo® pillow has on its users and enthusiastic supporters.

2. What makes your SensaSoft® material better than other material?
As the name implies, SensaSoft® is not only soft and comfortable but also very supportive as well and because of its advanced construction it reacts to the body's temperature and weight by moulding to the shape of your sleeping profile. This clever method of construction and its innovative design using our EasiBreathe™ ventilation principle always allow the maximum amount of air to reach you as you lie on it, and this is vital to encourage a Good Night's Sleep and help your body replace, rejuvenate, and rebuild its cells. SensaSoft's® structure also allows you to benefit from a faster recovery position than given by many other materials. That is to say, that whenever you move from one position to another, there is always material to support you and not a sagging dip into which you could be drawn. This means you will get a more peaceful, restful and cooler night's sleep. In fact one of our SensaSoft® materials was used in the construction of a mattress highly recommended by the Which consumer magazine.

Our brilliant SensaSoft® material, in conjunction with our uniquely innovative designs, keeps bed bugs away and discourages bed sores and skin irritations.
We really do provide genuine comfort through technology and design.

5. What is meant by your phrase THE SCIENCE of SLEEP™?
Over many years we have studied and experimented with the best possible ways to help you relax and attain a perfect undisturbed night's sleep without discomfort or pain. We have designed and developed hundreds of prototype Pulo® pillows and pertinent products to assist us in this quest for sleep perfection and with help from patients suffering from pain and sleeping disorders we have finally created our amazing Pulo® pillow and Pulo® Sleep System™.
We personally call this dedication for sleep perfection, THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP™.

Top of page

6. What is your Easibreathe™ ventilation system?
This is a totally unique system we have created by rippling the surface of the Pulo® pillow and by adding air channels into its construction and that of its inserts. It enables air to continually reach the user and is very effective in helping those with asthma, apnoea, and other breathing disorders.

7. How does the Pulo® pillow stop my snoring?
People snore for a number of reasons:
They might be overweight, so pressure is then exerted on the diaphragm which in turn pushes onto the lungs, which in turn hinders the easy flow of natural breathing during sleep.
They might produce a lot of mucus while they are sleeping and this might be caused by eating too many dairy products or too much food just before going to bed.
They might drink too much alcohol before trying to sleep and because alcohol relaxes the muscles, particularly the ones in the neck, then any pressure exerted on the neck, by insufficiently supportive pillows, pushes on the airways and consequently impedes the easy flow of normal breathing.
They might have badly formed airways from birth and sometimes only an operation can correct that problem.
The Pulo® pillow can help in the first three cases, because it is constructed in such a way, particularly taking into account the Rider™ on its upper surface, that it relieves pressure on your relaxing neck muscles and, by raising the upper part of your body, it can reduce the amount of pressure the diaphragm pushes onto your lungs.
Also its Easibreathe™ surfaces and air channels always allow the maximum amount of air to circulate around your face and head while you sleep.
For even easier breathing, try our EasiBreathe™ natural essential aromatherapy oil which can be used in conjunction with our tailor-made Pulo® pillow covers.
Please email paul@pulo.co.uk if you are interested in my Snoring Information Sheet.

Looking after your Pulo®

14. How long should my Pulo® pillow last?
Your Pulo® pillow will last for years but we suggest you change it whenever you feel the need and you must always remember that you are putting your head on it every single night so it will need replacing at some stage, purely for personal hygienic reasons. Perhaps you should look at replacing your Pulo® pillow, in the same way as you would having your car serviced. If you use your car daily and your Pulo® pillow nightly, then, like your car, it also has to be well looked after and eventually replaced. It is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of continually having a perfect night's sleep.
Therefore we suggest you change your Pulo® pillow every year in order to gain the most benefits from its unique properties and we offer an environment friendly way of doing this by using our unique Pulo® Part Exchange Process.
However if you need to just replace the softer or harder inserts for your Pulo® pillow they are available from our website.

Top of page

15. How do I take care of my Pulo® pillow?
Although it is not possible to wash your Pulo® pillow because that process will remove its fire retardant element as well as other properties, we do advise you to occasionally remove all your Pulo® pillow's covers and place it in a well aired place, or in fine weather, outside. If you gently squeeze the air in and out of your Pulo® pillow for a few minutes, it will make it feel fresher and more flexible but please remember your Pulo® pillow can tear, so be careful when doing this.
Please note: Should your Pulo® pillow seem discoloured, please do not worry, this effect is caused simply by the heat from your body reacting with the material and it does not have any detrimental effect on its properties or its ability to function.

Top of page

16. Is my Pulo® pillow washable?
In theory it is, but in practice it will remove its fire retardant characteristics and other properties. We suggest you occasionally remove it from its cover or covers and air it.

Top of page

17. How do I wash my Pulo® pillow cover?
Please read the washing instructions on the label of the cover.
The fabrics used in the make up of our covers vary and as such, so can the preferred washing instructions. To be safe you can always hand-wash any of the covers in warm soapy water.

Top of page

18. Will my Pulo® pillow get hot and will I sweat on it?
Our SensaSoft® material used in all our products is open-celled so it lets air pass through it easily, unlike many other types of foam which are often constructed in a closed-cell method. Your Pulo® pillow also has air channels passing through its surfaces and this ensures you get as much air as possible circulating around your head and face while you sleep. If you want to really cool down at nights you might be interested in one of our cool packs available as an optional extra from our website, or from the leaflet enclosed with your purchase.

Pulo® inserts and extras

19. What do the different inserts do and how do I swap them around?
The Rider™ covering the top of the Pulo® pillow is usually used for raising the head and relieving pressure on the neck and this can greatly reduce the effects of snoring.
The large insert at the top of the Pulo® pillow, on which your head and face rests, varies the amount of support and consequently, pain relief, that can be given to your head, neck, shoulders and back, as well as lower parts of your body.
The standard insert already positioned in your Pulo® pillow is the one that generally gives you an overall restful and comfortable night's sleep by aligning your body in such a way that many of your body's pressure points no longer push down on your mattress and it is this pushing- down effect that can cause an increase in your body's aches and pains.
The soft insert generally helps you achieve more pain relief in the lower back, hips and legs.
The hard insert generally helps you get more pain relief in the neck, shoulders and upper back.
All the large inserts can be turned over, as is your preference, to slightly alter your sleeping height, available air circulation, or sleeping surface.
For those of a lighter build or for those who prefer to sleep on a low pillow, the large insert can be completely removed. Sleep between the two ridges on the top of your Pulo® pillow if you have lower back pain or on the lower rippled Plumesilk™ surface if you have neck or upper back pain.
The circular channels cut into the base of the Pulo® pillow are all inserts that can be removed or swapped around as required. By using the softer yellow channel inserts or harder white ones, you can actually customise your Pulo® pillow to help relieve more aches and pains in specific parts of your body. This can only be done by trial and error but is well worth getting right and because everybody is different, it is a process only the individual users can carry out.
You decide what suits you best!
Be patient when trying different inserts and sleeping positions. Ideally if you find a position you think will be suitable, do not just try it for a few hours or one night, try it for 3 or 4 nights at least. It often takes a little while before your Perfect Pulo® Position can be found.

20. What are the optional extras available for my Pulo® pillow?

21. How do your optional Pulo® pillow aromatherapy oils work?
Combined with our unique Easibreathe™ ventilation and air circulation system, the effects of our special high grade natural aromatherapy essential oils are stunning. We currently have three exclusive mixes as part of our optional extra package which comes complete with a tailor-made Pulo® pillow cover with pockets that house our clever aroma pads: SleepWell™, BreatheWell™, and BugOff™. 22. How does your optional Pulo® Pillow magnetic insert work?
Magnet or biomagnetic therapy is fascinating and I have practiced it for many years and during that time realised how important it can be in relieving many head and neck disorders and can prove very effective in the treatment of migraines and chronic headaches. It is not suitable for everyone, especially those with heart pacemakers, mechanical insulin dispensers or in pregnancy, so please kindly email me on paul@pulo.co.uk for an information leaflet and purchase form.

23. How does your Pulo® pillow hot or cold pack work?
Just simply place the pack in the freezer or microwave for the times indicated in the instructions. The effects can be so beneficial.

Pulo® queries

24. Why does my Pulo® pillow sometimes feel cold and firm but softer at other times?
Because our SensaSoft® material reacts with the temperature around it, or with whatever is placed on it, then if it is in a cold place it will feel firmer but in a warmer one, softer. This is why when you initially receive your Pulo® pillow it might seem too firm, especially if it has been delivered by mail or by carrier. Simply place it for a while somewhere warm, like your bedroom and it will feel perfect when it is time to be used. It is also an idea to rest you head for 5 to 10 minutes on your Pulo® pillow before you go to sleep and this gives the material time to warm and mould to your sleeping profile.

Top of page

25. How long will it take for me to get used to my Pulo® pillow?
You might find the Pulo® pillow to be a perfect fit right away without having to remove, alter or swap over any of the inserts. However it might be a process of trial and error before you discover your most beneficial sleeping position. Please be patient, it will be worth it.
Sleeping on a Pulo® pillow is a totally new experience for anyone and we generally say that after 7 to 14 days you will start to appreciate how wonderful it is and find it impossible to sleep on anything else. Of course you might need longer if you are perfecting your customization.
However, if it is difficult to find your perfect sleeping position, simply relax on the bed in your usual way and try to picture exactly how your head, neck, shoulders and back are resting on the Pulo® pillow in comparison with how you are positioned on your mattress.
If you have a partner, ask him or her to see what your relaxed resting profile looks like. If your head is too high or your neck too raised or your back too arched, then, after tearing off the Rider™ covering the upper surface of your Pulo® pillow, swap over or remove some inserts until your head and body seem comfortable but appropriately supported. The Rider™ can be removed unless you prefer to sleep in a raised position or are used to sleeping on two pillows and find it difficult to easily switch to one. Because it raises the head, it relieves pressure on the neck which can often dramatically reduce the effects of snoring.
Please note: Using the Rider™ might reduce some of the benefits normally gained when trying to relieve some specific body pains or sleeping disorders.

Top of page

26. What do I do after receiving my Pulo® pillow and how can I vary my sleeping positions?
FIRSTLY, please follow the user's instructions enclosed in your package.
Carefully (the SensaSoft® material can tear, see 36, so care is needed when handling) unwrap your Pulo® pillow and allow it to expand at room temperature until all of its air cells are filled and your Pulo® pillow feels soft and flexible. Then hold it up and look at it from one end:
You will see a thin slice of material covering the upper surface of your Pulo® pillow and this is called the Rider™.
If you have bought your Pulo® pillow to help you stop snoring or if you find it difficult to sleep on a low pillow, then we generally advise you to use the Rider™. It is lightly attached to the upper surface and you can either gently tear it off and replace it as required, or leave it in position attached by one flap.
However, for the first few nights you should sleep on your Pulo® pillow with no inserts removed or swapped. Try two nights on the upper surface and then two nights on the lower one and this allows you to get the feel of it.
Once you have realised how your Pulo® pillow performs and the reaction it has with your body, you can then start removing or swapping inserts (see instructions and details below) to find your perfect sleeping format with the maximum amount of comfort and pain relief.
You will also notice the shape of a wide insert that has been cut into the top of the Pulo® pillow, and below and to each side of that, you will see circular channels cut into the base.
In the package you received containing your Pulo® pillow there is a bag of interchangeable inserts, as well as a velcro edged slip which you put around your Pulo® pillow before putting it, either inside your own pillow case, or inside one of our tailor made luxury Pulo® Covers (available with pockets into which aromatherapy oils can be placed and shown as optional extras on our website).
The bag contains 2 large inserts for the top, and channel inserts for the base.
If required, you can remove the material from the small channels of all the large inserts and this gives you a softer, more ventilated surface on which to rest your head and face. However some users prefer not to remove them. You decide what suits you best!
The yellow inserts make the Pulo® Pillow softer and the white inserts make the Pulo® pillow firmer. If you remove all the inserts, the Pulo® pillow will be very soft and only slightly supportive, and some users, especially those who might sleep on their front, find this preferable.
The removal or swapping of different inserts can greatly help specific disorders so please study the enclosed instructions and diagram before doing so. There are helpful suggestions and procedures you can try before experimenting on your own.
The channel inserts you can see cut in to the base of the Pulo® pillow, on each side and below the large insert, can easily be removed or swapped over with the softer or firmer ones, if, and when required. You decide what suits you best!
If you suffer from neck pain then use a softer channel insert, but if you suffer from shoulder or back pain, try using a firmer one.
To remove or swap any channel inserts, gently open the channels and carefully pull out the inserts, being sure not to stretch or tear them. They might be needed again!
While you are looking at the end of your Pulo® pillow, you cannot help but notice that either of the two ridges which would support your neck when you are asleep, are both a different size and shape: The longer, thinner ridge is for users with shorter lighter necks and narrower shoulders and the thicker, bulkier one is for users with longer, heavier necks and broader shoulders.
Either the flatter upper, or the rounded lower rippled Plumesilk™ surface of your Pulo® pillow can be used.
The upper surface tends to raise your head slightly and generally gives you more support if you are looking for pain relief for specific parts of your body.
The lower surface tends to generally give a more rounded soft support if you are looking for pain relief for your shoulders and upper neck.
You decide which suits you best!
Please note:
The details we give on our website and in our instruction leaflet are only to be taken as suggestions and not as medical advice. Everybody is different and what we think might be suitable for one user, might not in fact be suitable for others. You, the user, must decide which combination of inserts, or lack of inserts, and Pulo® pillow positioning suits you the best. We cannot be responsible for any medical disruptions to your body caused by our suggestions or use of our Pulo® pillow and if you have any doubt about trying one, please firstly seek the advice of your doctor, consultant, therapist or practitioner.

27. What cover do I get with my Pulo® pillow?
Every Pulo® pillow supplied comes complete with a slip that is secured by velcro around its upper and lower surfaces. This slip acts as the Pulo® protector and has a limited lifespan but white luxury cotton or stretch fabric tailor-made slips, covers or cases, with natural aromatherapy essential oils, are available as optional extras from our website, or from the leaflet enclosed with your purchase.

Top of page

28. Will my Pulo® pillow fit inside a standard pillow case?
Yes, unlike many silly shaped small medical pillows, it will, but you might be interested in a tailor-made Pulo® Case which enables you to place pads of our various aromatherapy natural essential oils to help you relax or breathe more easily or deter bugs. They are available as an optional extra from our website, or from the leaflet enclosed with your purchase.

Top of page

29. What is the reason for the different surfaces on your Pulo® pillows?
The different surfaces provide, either, increased support, increased comfort or better ventilation for the user. See FAQs 26 for a more detailed description of how the surfaces function.

Top of page

30. Why did my Pulo® pillow seem to have a slight odour about it when I first received it?
Do not worry, it is simply the anti-bacteria, fire retardant and de-odourising ingredients within your Pulo® pillow, which can sometimes cause a slight odour. It is not harmful and most people actually find it quite pleasant. In fact it disappears after a short period of time, but leaving your Pulo® pillow in the fresh air can help speed this up. However to create your own lovely health beneficial aroma, you might like to try one of our natural aromatherapy essential oil packs.
See 21.

Top of page

31. Why does my Pulo® pillow vary a little in colour?
Do not worry, our Pulo® pillows are artisan products and as such are not always exactly perfect or alike. They are unique and can vary slightly in colour depending on whichever section of a block they are created from. This, combined with the way in which the de-odourisers are added, can cause a slight mix up of colours. This actually adds to their charm.

Top of page

32. Why does my Pulo® pillow seem to have uneven surfaces and is not totally exact in its shape and form?
As I mention above, do not worry, our Pulo® pillows are artisan products and as such are not always exactly perfect or alike. They are unique and can vary slightly in shape and form and this can add to their charm.

33. How green is my Pulo® pillow?
We try to use as few chemicals as possible in all our Pulo® products but because of the very nature of any manufactured foam, there are chemicals always involved in their production.

34. Do you offer a Pulo® pillow or other products made from totally natural materials, like rubber or mixes? If so, how can I order some?
Yes we do, so please kindly email me paul@pulo.co.uk for more details and to discuss the ordering process.

35. What do I do if my Pulo® pillow seems to be ineffective?

36. How strong or fragile is the SensaSoft™ material used in the Pulo® pillow and all of your other products?
